When looking for a hotel near Waverly Hills Sanatorium Kentucky, consider the SpringHill Suites Louisville Downtown. The hotel is a 25 minute drive from this historic site, a defunct tuberculosis treatment center said to be one of the most haunted hospitals in the eastern United States.

The five story facility opened in 1924 in response to the tuberculosis epidemic ravaging the country and accommodated up to 400 patients. Since the disease was largely incurable until the introduction of antibiotics, many people succumbed to the illness and died while at the sanatorium. Although officially closed to tuberculosis patients in 1961, the facility was opened a year later as the Woodhaven Geriatrics Hospital. Rumors say that until its close in 1984 the hospital treated many people for mental illness with practices now considered harsh and outdated. Given the sad history of the many people who once lived in this gothic style sanatorium, it may well be home to the paranormal.

Current owners Charlie and Tina Mattingly have opened the Waverly Hills Sanatorium in Kentucky for both historical and haunted tours. Visitors can choose from traditional 2-hour guided historical tours and 4-hour or 8-hour paranormal investigations as well as private overnight ghost hunts.
